”It is important to know that I am not alone, that there are others just like me. Speaking and discussions help me to cope with difficult emotions and challenges that come with caring for a person with mental health problems.”

Pohjois-Karjalan mielenterveysomaiset – FinFami ry is a regional association of Families of People with mental illness based in Joensuu, North Karelia. We provide both professional and peer support for family members and carers of people with mental disorders, mental problems and addiction problems. We believe that the needs of all family members for support and understanding should be recognised and fully provided for.

Do you have a family member living with mental disorder? Do you need information and support to help to cope? It’s important to ensure your own physical, social and emotional needs are met so you can cope better in times of stress, as well as over the longer term. Your wellbeing matters.

Our peer groups meet in Joensuu, Lieksa, Kitee, Nurmes and Polvijärvi. Language of the discussions is Finnish. Group meetings are attended by our personnel. Some of the groups are organised in co-operation with Siun sote (the regional health care and social service provider) or with other local organisations.

Peer groups provide support and advice from people in similar situation, discussion on how to cope in everyday life and information about support and services for both the families and mental health patients.

In order to cope, family members – including children – benefit from information and supportive discussions with a professional of social welfare and healt care. We provide supportive discussions for families and carers in North Carelia confidentially free of charge. Don’t hesitate to contact us for more information.
